“Doug” is the name sake of the Echo Ridge Farm; his full name is Echo Ridge Doug. Doug is owned by Kelly Perkins but loved by all. Doug was foaled on March 30, 1991 out of Shamara Jane by Confidant (Confidant is out of Chou Croute and sire was Secretariat!). He began his life as a racehorse in Minnesota and is now one of those OTTB we love so much. Doug’s racing career was far from prosperous and as a result he earned the nickname “400 dollar Doug” from a few of his biggest fans at ERF who are closest to him. Doug had 9 starts in his racing career before going to live with Kelly in 1999 when he began his second career; the one he should have been born into. Doug has excelled at jumper shows and is perhaps happiest out on the cross country course. Dressage is his least favorite as it takes too much control for a free spirit like Doug to handle. Doug enjoys the occasional run on the beach, is not afraid of the water at all and will plunge right in if his rider would allow him. He gets excited and feels special whenever he is trailered somewhere. He is such a ham and loves horse shows when people are around to watch HIM! Doug has a few trademark behaviors which always prove to entertain spectators. When he is excited (all of the time when he is jumping) he will let out squeals and back leg kicks of joy. Doug can be a wild ride but he is thoroughly enjoyable to those who understand the sweet and funny boy. He gives a wide lipped “thank you” to those who spoil him with a treat. Starlight mints, molasses or gingersnap cookies and even soda are some of his weaknesses.

Doug's Racing Record
Doug raced from August 1994 until August 1995. With nine starts, his best finish was a 5th place, out of 10, in July of 1995. With a total lifetime earnings of some where in the $400.00 dollar range, lets just say, Doug was not born to be a race horse. Some of the race comments next to Doug's name proves this fact. Here are some of them: broke slowly, no factor, lacked late response and gave way. Even though Doug wasn't a big hit at the race track he is a big hit at Echo Ridge Farm.
